Personally, this book was pivotal in my sexual healing journey. As a victim and survivor of sexualized violence, I had an overwhelming sense of feeling sexually broken, pressured, and isolated. Emily’s words and real stories gave me the gift of self-compassion and an understanding for why I was doing and being a certain way. Her practical suggestions were incredibly helpful. Plus she’s very real and funny. If you have a partner, listen to the audiobook with them! (*errs on the heteronormative side).

Alternative easier read (less science-y): What Happened to You? By Oprah Winfrey & Bruce D. Perry. This was the first book I discovered on my journey when taking my health into my own hands. I related to so much of this book, shedding many tears of relief and a few of sorrow. A must-read for anyone with chronic pain or illness.

     Toni Bernhard

This is a book for people who will not be their old self again and for all those whom, at least for now, getting better isn’t possible. This is a book that most reassuringly says even to those people, “You, too, are going to be okay – even if you never recover your health!”

Come As You Are: The surprising new science that will transform your sex life
